1. What inspired you to pursue a career in Ayurveda?
As a health coach, my dietary and lifestyle recommendations were mainstream and needed more customization. Ayurveda is unique and customized to a person's mind/body type, season, and environment. With my experience the more personalised the treatment, the more effective the healing is.
2. Could you summarize the key principles of Ayurveda?
The fundamental principles of Ayurveda view the universe as composed of five elements: space, air, fire, water and earth. These elements are present in everything, including our bodies. They combine to form three doshas or energies: Vata (space and air), Pitta (fire and water) and Kapha (water and earth). We each have varying proportions of each dosha, generally one or two in dominance. Ayurveda believes that what, how, and when we eat, our lifestyle and beauty routine should be specific to our body type to optimize digestion and vitality. The time of day, the season, and where we live are essential factors in developing an Ayurvedic lifestyle.
3. How do you determine and address a person's dosha?
I determine and address a person's dosha using a comprehensive health assessment questionnaire, evaluating a person's psychological makeup and facial diagnosis.
4. How does Ayurveda approach common health issues holistically?
Ayurveda emphasizes the balance between mind, body, and spirit for optimal health and well-being. Yoga, meditation, massage and purification programs cleanse your body of undigested food through practices like enema and herbs, bringing your mind and body into balance.
5. How do Ayurveda and modern medicine complement each other?
Ayurveda assesses the patient's physical, mental, and emotional state, offering a more holistic view of health. When combined with the precise diagnostic tools of modern medicine, this approach can lead to a deeper understanding of the root causes of chronic diseases.
6. What is a simple Ayurvedic routine for daily wellness?
• Waking up at sunrise,
• Using a tongue scraper
• Sipping on warm water
• Massaging the body with warm oil before showering
• Get moving and breathing exercises
• A warm, light breakfast
• A hearty lunch
• light dinner before sunset
7. How has Ayurveda personally benefited you?
It has benefited my life in many ways, including energy levels, digestion, and mindset.
8. What first steps would you suggest for someone new to Ayurveda?
Start your day with warm water in the morning, have foods that are well cooked and implement spices and herbs to help make foods more digestible; follow the natural circadian rhythm, which means the best time to sleep is before 10 pm and waking up with sunset at about 6 am depending on the season.
