Nasya - An Ayurvedic Pancha karma Therapy

In Ayurveda it is believed that the nose is the direct passage to the brain. Nasya is an ancient method of dropping a substance into the nose and inhaled in order to lubricate the passages and make way for chi or prana (life force) to enter the head and body. Substances can be medicated oils / juices / and powders which stimulate the vital centres of brain.

To understand its numerous benefits, one must understand that Nasya, benefits the nervous system. It works with the vital ‘chi’ or ‘prana’ through the breath correlating to the brain and sensory perception of smell. It is the doorway to the seat of consciousness. It works to balance all dosas, particularly Vata Dosha.

When we administer herbal oils, nasya helps clean toxins that accumulate in upper body (sinus, throat, nose, head areas). Certain ingredients sooth and protect the delicate mucus membranes, also relieving tension in the head and stress. This can balance VPK. Nasya can sooth the voice making it more attractive. Certain people with excess dosas also administer nasya for hair fall. It can help eyesight, promote mental clarity and even insomnia, anxiety and depression.

Please consult an Ayurvedic Practitioner to see if this is a suitable daily practice that can be incorporated into your life.

Lakshmi Harilela
I was cooking since I was 12 years old, alongside my late Father, Mohan Harilela. My family ran restaurants, so I was always sneaking into the kitchens and eating everything I could get my hands on. Since a very young age, I have always had a passion for food, as I was constantly surrounded by it. So I decided to go to Hotel Management School Les Roches in Switzerland for some formal education.
